Brain Gym Testimonial

I first heard about Peak Ability’s Brain Gym at Harpe Laser and Wellness and it intrigued me.  But a quick background of how I arrived here.  I had been struggling with major depression and anxiety for 20 years and I have tried everything I could think of to overcome my situation.  I was on antidepressants and anxiety meds for those 20 years, have been to psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors, and they did help some, but I still had depressive episodes, even suicidal thoughts, and rarely any high moments as the drugs made me feel like a zombie most of the time.  The talk therapy had given me some good thought processes to work with.  With the help of a preventative medicine doctor a year ago, I was able to taper off the psychiatric meds and replace them with some more natural supplements.  At that time, I also quit drinking alcohol after decades of self-medicating with it.  I wanted to do everything I could to improve my mental health, to live life instead of just existing from day to day.  After the fog of antidepressants had lifted I began to experience more of raw life – the ups and downs, but still had some really low times of thinking it would be easier if I could just end it – I wouldn’t have this torment and anguish in my soul, I wouldn’t have to walk around life with a “wet blanket of dread” smothering my heart.  I realized I needed better coping skills to not only handle life, but to enjoy it.  That’s when I decided to try out the Brain Gym.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but it does live up to its name.

During some of the sessions, I literally felt like my brain just lifted some weights.  Charles is an amazing coach and my mood just lifts with every visit.  He has a super positive attitude, is encouraging, supportive, and genuinely cares about my well-being. Besides the in-session training, he gave me lots of homework so I could get as much out of the program as possible. Some benefits I’ve noticed are that I’m more aware of when I start to feel anxious, and I can immediately use some of the tools he gave me to cope with the situation.  I seem to rebound quicker than a few months ago when “conflicts” with people arise or when my self-criticism goes into overdrive – I don’t go as deep into a downward spiral.  Before the program, physical exertion would usually make me feel so angry and stressed even if it was something I used to enjoy.  But I recently spent all day helping my daughter and son-in-law move to another state and I remained positive the entire day.  The same happened two days later when I spent all day working around the house on improvements.  Remaining positive for that long has not happened in years.

Charles tailors the program to each person’s needs and goals and will keep you challenged.  In fact, I still hear his voice in my head sometimes when I reach for my bad habits – always encouraging me even after the end of my program, like a great coach.

Life has so much opportunity and I can see it more clearly now.  This program has given me a new hope that I can thrive when I was previously in a very dark place.  It provided the missing tools I needed to deal with overwhelming anxiety and depression, but there are many other applications.  I encourage you to check it out and I hope this program frees your mind like it has mine.

I can’t say enough about my experience with Peak Ability Brain Fitness. As a small local practice, they can provide a higher level of personalized experiences. Their responsiveness to individual needs is like no other.

This is a three pillar training program consisting of Charles Harpe who has a background in biology and music, and who is a certified Cognitive Coach and is certified in the all of the technologies and techniques used by the practice, Dr. Charles Harpe of Harpe Laser and Wellness as the medical consult, and Claudia Harpe as the nutritionist. Claudia created a nutritional plan to help me feed my brain to ensure peak performance. Charles is the backbone of the program.

In 2014 I suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) while performing my duties as a police officer.  The trauma to my brain caused a sequence of seizers and a 4 day hospital stay.  My recovery was long and difficult.  I suffered from mental, physical and visual disabilities. I went through a number of therapies, however was not able to return to the job I loved. When I moved to Mills River I found it difficult to find anyone that did preventative or reparative brain training. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard about Peak Ability through Harpe Laser and Wellness.

During my consult Charles paid close attention to my cognitive deficiencies and structured a program to fit my needs.  The first few trainings took some getting used to as they were like nothing I had ever done before.  They felt even a little silly at times.  Charles is so supportive and encouraging the training was fun.  After the second session I started to see the improvement in my ability to retain specific pieces of information.  I could feel brain fatigue.  This was like no other cognitive training I had ever been through.  We worked on short term and long term memory, mindfulness, focus, balance, resilience and coherence.  I truly enjoyed all the benefits from this program.  Sounds silly, but I was so proud of myself when I was able to remember 6 different coffee orders without writing them out. This was something I haven’t been able to do in years.

I would recommend this program to everyone from YOU to athletes, police, fire, first responders, business executives and many more.  I have found that this program encourages the brain to create new neural pathways making it stronger and more efficient.

I can’t recommend it enough!!!!
